• Gathered Under Grace

It's tough out there in the world. It can be hard to be nice most everywhere you go now a days. A critical spirit has taken control of our world.

Why does that guy drive so slow? Why does that guy drive so fast? Doesn't anyone use a turn signal anymore? Why can't that kid just pull up his pants? How about that guy that writes bible verses on his face? What's that all about? Who in the world thought that disco should make a comeback?

If you like Trump you're in trouble. If you like Obama you're in trouble. If you like Sanders you're in trouble. If you're for black lives matter, blue lives matter or all lives matter, then you're .... against some other persons life or maybe you're all pro life. If you are pro life you couldn't possibly understand a pro choice persons point of view.

We aren't even privy to facts, but nevertheless, judgements are cast. A tragedy occurs, blame is passed out, (facts or no facts) and it's all over the news and the next day (or the next week...or whenever) the 'real' reasons are quietly skimmed over and quickly forgotten. If we mess up, fall down or even laugh too loud; it might end up on one of the many social media outlets. Everyone is ready to comment and complain about how that thing, or that person, or that whatever that happens to be 'trending' is affecting their way of life. Comments will come in from every kind of standard that is even remotely measurable. Everyone is a champion of something and if your opinion doesn't line up with theirs, then you're just plain wrong. You'll quickly be lambasted and hung out to dry in the court of public opinion. Yikes!

In other words, if you are ______then you don't understand ______and wouldn't, couldn't, and especially can't get _______. The premise is that you'll never be able to understand, want to try to understand, grasp and or just plain try to see any other perspective. Let alone suggesting that we could agree to disagree. Disagreeing does not equal hate. Hate equals hate. Hate does not justify anything. Hate hurts. Don't hate.

Don't! That's the very first word in this passage. Don't. Don't pick on people. Don't pick fights just to seem bigger, cause you're not. Don't be a bully, just because you can. Don't talk about other people just because you happen to know how to talk. Don't jump on the bandwagon, just because it's passing by. Don't jump on other people's faults either. Faults are easy to come by and oh so hard to let go of. Jeez. Look in the mirror. Yes, you too have faults. Yes, you too make mistakes. Yes, it happens to all of us. So, Don't.

Don't think that you couldn't ever make a mistake, cause you can and you do. Don't think that your kid would never, cuz they just might. Don't think that your fashion choices have always been the rage, cause they haven't. Don't think that your candidate will always be the winner, causes someone always loses. Don't think that you're better than so and so, cause you're not. Don't think that 'those' people cause all the problems. They don't. Don't (as the saying goes) throw the baby out with the bath water. Don't think that God doesn't love them too, because He does! ALL of our lives matter to God.

The Golden Rule applies again. Treat others the way you want to be treated. If it was you, your child, or someone you loved or cared about...what would you say then? You too might need a friend when the going gets rough. Look carefully at yourself before finding fault anywhere else. You have plenty.

Do be compassionate. Do have mercy for each other. Do show grace to the world. Oh, for Goodness sakes, be kind to one another. Do love another! Do love!

Matthew 7: 1-2 MSG

Don’t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults— unless, of course, you want the same treatment. That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging. It’s easy to see a smudge on your neighbor’s face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own.
