Love is ...

As I witnessed a lovely couple marry today I was reminded of the Love is...moments in marriage.

When I was a kid there was a a 'Love Is... ' comic strip in the newspaper. Yes, the old school newspaper. We had news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered daily to our doorstep. It was 'da bomb' when it landed right on your doorstep and sounded like a bomb when it hit your house. Everything you wanted and needed to know in print. Published every day, sometimes twice a day and it was great for all kinds of things once you had read it. The comics especially made great book covers and gift wrap in a pinch. It was all the #preInternet public pages combined and the comics page was the best page ever.

'Love is...' was a single box comic strip that first began publication in the 1960's. (A comic strip is similar to an graphic novel for those of you born in the post modern era.) The Love is...comic had captions like:

Love is ...never having to say your sorry; Love is...sharing your milkshake; Love is...two hearts traveling the same path; Love is...forever; and Love is....what all the books in the world can't describe. One book, however, describes 'Love is...' very clearly and distinctly.

1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 MSG

"Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance."

Love is...patient and kind. Patience can sometimes be hard to come by in marriage. Yet, when you remember to add kindness, it makes it a whole lot easier to find your patience.

Love is...not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Goes right back to that first one...kindness. We don't show love when we think we want something we don't realize we already have. We don't show love when we dismiss our partners accomplishments as unimpressive. We aren't showing love when we try to make someone else feel less than enough. We don't show love if we are too proud to admit when we are wrong.

Love is...not demanding of its own way. Love helps us see the other persons point of view. Love makes someone else's need a priority. Love is kind (here it is again) and thoughtful about each other's calendar.

Love is...not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. Sharp and hateful words have no place in love. They do happen however; and when they do, you have to recognize the situation, identify the issue and resolve the conflict as soon as possible. Love words are kind (back to #1 again) and thoughtful. Love is generous. Love doesn't keep score and count all the ways you let the other person down. Love can't even remember them. Love quickly forgets the wrongs and stays focused on all the good things that do go right.

Love is...full of joy whenever the truth wins out. Love doesn't bring up disappointments but does share in the happy moments of winning together. Love shares the good and hopes the best for each other. Love is being there to catch each other when you do fall. Love is always having a safe place to fall. Love is always being able to count on each other, no matter what.

Love is...always there. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Every time, all the time, through thick and thin...love is there. Through the good, the bad and the ugly moments in life...love is there. Love is there through loss and through growth. Love is there. Love is forever and a day. Love is ever joyful and shouts it out from the rooftops.

Love Is... filled with possibilities and adventure when you allow God's word to be your guide.
