Man Plans, God Laughs
'Man Plans, God Laughs'. Have you ever heard this saying? After conducting a little research, I found that this saying is a Yiddish proverb. (Mann traoch, Gott Lauch). Is this Yiddish (Jewish) proverb a play on the very words of Proverbs?
Proverbs 19:21 AMP
"Many plans are in a man’s mind, But it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand (be carried out)."
Proverbs 16:9 AMP
"A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], But the Lord directs his steps and establishes them."
Is this saying still around today because we make plans without consulting God? Could we even consider the consequences of our plans in the same way that God does? God sees the beginning and the end, so I believe His plan is better than anything we could come up with. If we can follow the path, go where He says and do what He says, we're going to do well. His plan is better.
This saying brought to mind the story of Abraham and Sarah. (Genesis 15-21) Here is a story of God's plans, man's plans and laughter. God told Abraham he would have a son in his old age and Abraham laughed with joy. Skip ahead and we hear Sarah laugh at the idea. Not so much with joy. Sarah snickers at the idea. Sarah didn't realize what she had done until after she'd done it. The Bible tells us she was afraid. She laughed at God. He was talking directly to her and she laughed 'at Him'. I bet she was afraid.
As you read through their story you can see that Abraham and Sarah tried to 'out plan' God a few times. You can also see God's sense of humor in their story. God, Himself, names their child. Isaac's name means 'laughter'. Yep. They made plans, but God got the last laugh.
Genesis 21:6 AMP
"Sarah said, “God has made me laugh; all who hear about our good news will laugh with me.”
