I was recently listening to the song “Dear Younger Me”, by Mercy Me, and was struck by the truths of the lyrics. They deeply resonated with my spirit. If only we could speak to our younger selves. If only our younger selves knew what we know today, what a difference it might make.
No matter what age you might be as you are reading this, we all have so much we could tell to our younger selves. So much knowledge that would save us from heartache and despair. I am not talking about changing the events in our lives. After all you and I are the sum of our experiences. What I am talking about our responses to the events in our lives.
Perhaps you know the saying from Winston Churchill “Those who fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.” If we had only listened to the wisdom of the words of those who came before us. Sometimes we aren’t ready to hear it or maybe we can’t learn it unless we go through it ourselves. Even the knowledge that the ‘if only’ moments can only get us so far is priceless.
If only we knew these truths sooner. The truth that we only had to carry our baggage as far as the cross. The truth that we really can put down the junk and the issues and the tragedies and let them go forever. The truth that Jesus is able to take them from us, no matter how often we decide to pick them back up. He will take them each and every time. If only.
Matthew 11:8 NLT
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
