Praying for some of us is hard. We just don't think we know how or we are afraid we are going to do it wrong somehow. Prayer is simply a conversation. Jesus tells us to pray simply and honestly. He even stipulates as simply and honest as you can manage. Matthew 6:6 “Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace." In the preceding verse Jesus cautions against theatrics and trying to turn your prayers into a show. In the next several verses He cautions against suggestions of special formulas and programs in order to make sure that your prayers are heard. Jesus tells us to simply pray. If you feel that you need help getting started, Jesus suggests that you follow this simple prayer or as many people know it, 'The Lord's Prayer'. Matthew 6:9-13 KJV "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen." Here is the same prayer in the message version.
Matthew 6: 9-13 MSG "Like this: Our Father in heaven, Reveal who you are. Set the world right; Do what’s best— as above, so below. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil. You’re in charge! You can do anything you want! You’re ablaze in beauty! Yes. Yes. Yes."
And in the New Living Translation
Matthew 6:9-13 NLT "Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one." Look these verses up in whatever version you understand and then pray. Simply pray. Try it. Give prayer a chance. Talk to God. Simply pray, and however you feel lead to do it, talk to God. It's really much easier than you have ever imagined. Jesus encourages us to simply pray. Simply and honestly talk to your Father God. Just be there. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage and the focus will shift from you to God. You'll begin with thoughts of how do I do this, am I doing this right, to simply trying to speak honestly and before you know it you will begin to sense His Grace. God's presence will help you with the rest. The first step is to simply pray.
