'Forgiveness is the cure.' During a conversation with a friend these words were like a balm and uttered truth to our spirits, to our hearts. We were discussing hurts of the past. We can get wrapped up in the entanglements of past hurts. Real or imagined, hurts still hurt. What can change our perspective, our outlook on the pains of the past? Forgiveness is the cornerstone that begins our journey. Christ forgave us so that we might be free. We must continue the process of forgiveness. Forgiving those who have hurt us, frees us from the darkness of that hurt. It's the unforgiven hurt that holds us captive to the pain. I heard someone say this recently. Prisoners are held because of something they did. Captives are held because of something someone else did. Being held captive by past hurts only hurts us. Forgiveness is the cure for those hurts. It takes time and work to forgive. It may even require repetition to bring forgiveness to bear. We may not have chosen the hurt, but we can choose to forgive. Forgiveness is the cure, the freedom from our hurts. Isaiah 61 tells us all about Jesus and the power of forgiveness. Isaiah 61:1 NLT "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed." Weather we are held captive or prisoner, the Good News of freedom is revealed in Jesus. He came to forgive and to extend forgiveness. Prisoner or captive, we will find our freedom and our comfort in the forgiveness offered in Jesus. Comforted, released and set free. Good News indeed.
