Olive branches are traditionally a symbol for peace, an offer of reconciliation. In Genesis 8:1 the dove returns with an olive branch. The olive branch the dove returned with symbolized the reconciliation of God with His people. Psalm 52:8 MSG “And I’m an olive tree, growing green in God’s house. I trusted in the generous mercy of God then and now.” As David penned this Psalm there had been a catastrophic event that could have challenged his faith. David’s response was to call himself an olive tree. An olive tree growing in God’s greenhouse. Growing strong and sturdy. Deeply rooted in the generous mercy of God. Mercy is the beginnings of God’s peace for each of us. Mercy is the act of showing compassion and kindness towards others; without reservation. Mercy is what God offers to each of us through the person and salvation offered by Jesus Christ. May we each be like David; an olive tree growing green and sturdy in God’s greenhouse. Peacefully trusting in the goodness of God’s mercy. Offering compassion and kindness in the face of adversity. Faithfully trusting in God while offering peace and reconciliation to others. Fruitful olive trees that are deeply rooted in God’s peace.
