Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Three guys who chose to take a stand for God. Bound tightly, hand and foot, they were thrown into a fiery furnace. A furnace that was so hot, it killed the people who threw them into the blaze. Yet, as they took their stand, they hadn’t done anything to draw attention to themselves. As my friend said today, it wasn’t about what they were doing, it was about what they weren’t doing. They were not going to bow to anyone or anything, except God. Daniel 3:17-18 MSG “Your threat means nothing to us. If you throw us in the fire, the God we serve can rescue us from your roaring furnace and anything else you might cook up, O king. But even if he doesn’t, it wouldn’t make a bit of difference, O king. We still wouldn’t serve your gods or worship the gold statue you set up.” Into the fire they went, yet it was inside the fire that things changed. Things changed for those who were present and most especially for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Daniel 3:25 MSG “But look!” he said. “I see four men, walking around freely in the fire, completely unharmed! And the fourth man looks like a son of the gods!” Although they were walking around in a fire, they were walking in freedom. They were no longer bound, but freely walking with Christ. They came out refined in the fire, where they knew their strength was in the Lord. The process of their refinement changed lives forever. Their first steps, inside the fire and out, changed the heart of a king and an entire kingdom. We, too, can make a difference in the lives of those around us, even as we walk inside of our own struggle, because we draw on the strength of the Lord. We are never walking alone, because we are no longer bound, but freely walking with Christ.
