I found myself with a bit of an earwig recently. The Bruno Mars song, ‘Count On Me’, playing over and over in my head. It’s all about friendship. Friends who are there for each other during our good days and our bad days. Friends who love one another through thick and thin. Friends who happily pull one another through the rough times. I love the line, ‘we find out what we’re made of when we are called to help a friend in need’. Today this verse popped up in my Bible reading and it all sort of clicked. Romans 12:10 NLT “Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.” Check out the lyrics, they sound like they are right out of the pages of the Bible. Right out of this verse even. Love each other. Love each other with genuine affection. Genuine means the real deal. Not contrived or pretend, but real friendship. Affection is a gentle feeling of fondness. Taking delight in one another. Delight is a feeling of pleasure or happiness. Take delight in honoring one another. Honor is the sense of respect and esteem. Respecting one another. A friend is someone with genuine affection for another person, who is happy for and respects the another. That's friendship. We are each called to be that kind of friend. Someone who can be counted on in the good times and in the not so good times. Someone who can be counted on to help see us through. Someone who can be counted on to be there. Someone who is a real and true friend. True Friendship. Let's be that kind of friend.
