1 John 3:18-20 MSG “My dear children, let’s not just talk about love; let’s practice real love. This is the only way we’ll know we’re living truly, living in God’s reality. It’s also the way to shut down debilitating self-criticism, even when there is something to it. For God is greater than our worried hearts and knows more about us than we do ourselves.” This set of verses just knocks my socks off. The action of love, the practice of love in our lives, offering love to our fellowman, this the only way that we’ll know we are truly living in God’s reality. Gosh, I want to live in God’s reality, don’t you? It’s so true, that as we strive to be a better version of ourselves, we can get knocked down by debilitating self-criticism. Yet, the first part of the sentence is more powerful than any weight we ought to allow our own self-criticism to carry. The action, the practice of loving people shuts down the power of our self criticism. Shuts down. Now that’s truly powerful. Our God’s love is so extraordinary, so powerful and so full of promise. We know that God knows more about us than we know ourselves. We also know that God is greater and bigger than all of our worries. We know that we are loved by God and we know that His love changes everything. That’s God’s reality. Let’s live there.
