Contribute to Truth
As the hurricane was making landfall this morning, many of us were checking in on family and friends. Our concern, as we texted, posted, tweeted, messaged and called, was their safety. As we scrolled through the reports, we may have realized that we ended up having to fact-check many of those reports. Even as we are facing a serious weather crisis, we are inundated with rumors and false reports. Photos that years old, had overstated, photo-shopped or hyped up embellishments were posted, tweeted and shared creating a new problem that we had to face down. False alarm is not a great way to start the day, especially when we are already alarmed by the weather. Proverbs 18:8 NLT “Rumors are dainty morsels that sink deep into one’s heart.”
Dainty morsels sounds like a good thing. Tiny little tidbits that are samplings of a bigger bite to come. Sounds like great fun and games until it causes alarm and harm. However unlikely we’d like to think it occurs, false reports are not as uncommon as we’d hope that they'd be. When we share a secret, stretch the truth or flat out tell untruths (that would be lying), or when we create a fictional crisis we are contributing to false reports. Rumors tend to follow the release of false reports, creating confusion and alarm. 1 Peter 3:11 NLT “Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.” Each one of has the opportunity, even the responsibility, to quell false reports and rumors. Do good by outing that rumor as false. There are options to fact check rumors and fabrications on the internet. We can help defray the alarm created by false reports by verifying the truth. By searching out the truth we are contributing to a return to peace. Peace is found in Jesus and He is our Truth foundation. Jesus is Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6). Contribute to truth.
