Thank God for Trees
Thank God for trees. As I stepped out into the sunlight and high temperatures today, I was also searching out the nearest available shade. It wasn’t a conscious effort on my part, that is until I realized that I found relief in the shade of the tree. That’s when it dawned on me, and I laughed as Jonah was thrust upon my mind. Jonah was so happy that day. He was happy because of the shade tree that God had provided. Jonah 4:6 MSG “GOD arranged for a broad-leafed tree to spring up. It grew over Jonah to cool him off and get him out of his angry sulk. Jonah was pleased and enjoyed the shade. Life was looking up.” Jonah was in a sulk. He was in an angry sulk because God had forgiven those people; the people of Nineveh. The previous verses talk about how he just knew it was gonna happen. He knew that God was going to forgive them, just because He was sheer grace and mercy, not easily angered, and rich in love. He knew that God was able and bound to turn their expected punishment into a plan of forgiveness. Dude, how cool is that? But not Jonah. Jonah was just exasperated. In his mind they deserved everything terrible they had coming to them, but God! God had another plan. He had a plan of forgiveness. God still has a plan of forgiveness and His name is Jesus. When we find ourselves exasperated and in a Jonah sulk, we need to remind ourselves about the shade of God's trees. Thank God for His sheer grace and mercy, His unfailing love, and Jesus, His forgiveness plan; and Thank God for shade trees. Remember to thank God because we are standing under the promise of His mercy, grace, forgiveness and unfailing love in the shade of His trees.
