As we conclude 2018, many of us will find ourselves wore plumb out. The last few months have been so jam packed that we are just depleted. We have been running to catch up for so long that we don’t know which way to run anymore. As I was thinking about being tired, the end of the year, and all the things to come next year, I was reminded of an event in Elijah’s life. It was right after Elijah had been so very powerfully used of God against the prophets of Baal. He had experienced such a great success and then he found himself spiritually depleted. He was so tired that he fell victim to fear, his fear overtook him and he ran away. Elijah ran as fast and as hard as he could, but God was right on his heels. Elijah could only see the calamities that were right in front of him, that is until he heard that whisper. 1 Kings 19:11-12 NLT “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.” Elijah couldn’t see God, and Elijah couldn’t hear God, but God was right there. Even as Elijah ran, God provided for his needs. Even as he complained, God listened to his cries. Although Elijah felt alone, God was never far away. God is chasing after us, just like He chased after Elijah. We are never as far from God as He is from us. God is, even right now, as close to us as possible. God is in the whisper, not in the banging and the rushing and running to and fro. Stop, rest, listen and find the sound of God’s whisper.
May your New Year be filled with the delight of God’s presence and may that delight overflow with love, laughter and joy throughout your life. Happy New Year!
