Fear is a strong feeling. Our fears can manifest in many different ways. Fears that come out of nowhere; like that sudden stop to avoid a collision, an unexpected trip and fall, waking up from a nightmare and all the other intense experiences that cause us a momentary fear. Fear of uncertainties like; fear of the future, of a financial crisis, a legal setback, a health issue, the layoffs that are happening at work; the types of fears that keep us on the edge of our seats waiting for the next shoe to drop. Irrational fears can take on a life of their own; fear of the unknown, spiders and snakes, the dark, heights and bridges are a few of the irrational fears that can invade our senses. On the other hand, healthy fears keep us safe. The fear of being caught red handed keeps us on the straight and narrow. Fear of eating bad food makes us smell that unknown substance before we put it in our mouths. Fear of injury helps us use our tools safely. Fear of storms and their impact help us prepare ourselves for their possibilities. A healthy fear of God keeps us wise. Fear can be a good thing when it is accompanied by hope. Psalms‬ ‭31:24‬ ‭NLT‬‬ “So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord!” ‭‭ Hope gives us strength and courage. Being strong and courageous is about facing our fears even when we are afraid. Being afraid is normal. All of us are familiar with the feeling of being scared. Hope in God allows us to put our fears in His hands and hold onto the hope that we find in His love. Fear can get under our skin and stop us in our tracks, but hope loosens the grip of fear and brings the truth back into focus. Fear anticipates the worst possible outcome and hope gives us the ability to overcome that anticipation and face our fear. Hope in Jesus turns our anticipated fear into strength and courage. Jesus is where we find freedom from our fears and hope for tomorrow.
