A Memorable Moment
Today a friend was sharing a story about being recognized, not because someone knew them personally, but because of a memorable moment that stood out in their life. Most of us, at one time or another, have felt like we stood out in the crowd. It was probably one of those moments when we said or did something that was memorable; famously or infamously. A moment in time that is always remembered and reminisced over, and although sometimes we’d rather not remember, it’s still a memorable moment in time, that is shared and re-shared, time and time again.
John the Baptist has one of those moments too (well more than one, but who’s counting). John is not your average guy. He doesn't look like everyone else. He doesn't eat like everyone else. He speaks with a loud, booming voice that is filled with confidence and authority. When he speaks, people listen. John is standing in the river talking to the people about baptism. John's voice, the things he is saying, his words are drawing people in from all over the countryside. John was excited and expectant as he talked, because he knew what his path was and that he was walking in his destiny. John didn’t know it, but a memorable moment was about to happen in his life too. Jesus showed up and everything changed. Matthew 3:15 MSG “But Jesus insisted. “Do it. God’s work, putting things right all these centuries, is coming together right now in this baptism.” So John did it.” 'Baptize me', Jesus said. John hesitated and Jesus reassured him that this was the moment. The moment he had been waiting for his whole life. He reassured John, ‘God is putting it all together, right here and right now, in this very moment.' As Jesus was baptized, the glory of the Lord fell and God said 'This is My Son. Chosen and marked by my love. The delight of my love.' Wow! What a moment; a memorable moment that changed history and continues to change our lives today and forever. From our first moment of acceptance, Jesus changes us from the inside out and He keeps on changing us until we go to meet Him face to face. In that moment His Kingdom Life is ignited within us and we are renewed and made true before God. Thank God for that extraordinarily memorable moment that changed everything for the entire world forever and ever. On that day, and on the day that we meet Jesus ourselves, that memorable moment changes everything.
