The Gunk

As I have been helping a friend clean, prepare to paint and do some remodeling, we have come across some moldy bits. The black icky gunk that finds its way into the crevices in our dark, dank bathrooms. Nothing healthy grows in the dark. Mold. Fungi. Slime. They all thrive in the dark. They begin life in darkness and as they develop they make a foothold. Then they seep into every crevice and crack until eventually they take over. Turning what was once pristine into something else altogether. We can attempt to clean up the yucky spot by patching and sprucing up the area. If that doesn't work, we can try to bleach it or we can attempt to cover it up with paint. It's all cosmetic until we break it down to the real problem. We can't get rid of the gunk without taking a hard look at the actual break in the structure. What we really need to do is open the door and bring in the light, pull out that old gunk and truly begin the restoration process. Shame. Failure. Disappointments. They are like the gunk in our lives. They grow and thrive in the darkness. They begin in isolation until they develop foothold in our minds. They seep into our minds and they grow and fester, causing all kinds of havoc. Their negative influence can turn what was once a place of clarity into a place of confusion and turmoil. Isaiah 9:2 MSG "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. For those who lived in a land of deep shadows— light! sunbursts of light!"  When we expose these gunky places to the light of Jesus we can suddenly see. Seeing the issue from a fresh perspective can take away its powerful stronghold in our lives. When we are living in a land of deep shadows and darkness we need exposure to the light of Jesus. In the restoration world, Jesus is an amazing carpenter who can rebuild and restore our hearts. What we may consider the ruins within our lives, within our circumstances, are transformed into something amazing and joyful. What we see as unfixable can be renewed when Jesus reveals the truth. When Jesus restores us everything changes. Light therapy. Sunbursts of His light. Jesus is the light of the world and He is a restoration genius.
