Precious and Priceless
I heard a message this morning about Mary of Bethany anointing the feet of Jesus with oil. I currently work with oils, so I naturally became curious about the oil that Mary used; what was it and why was it so precious.
John 12:3 NLT
“Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.”
Oil of nard was, and still is, a very precious oil. It is made from the root of a particular plant that only grows in the Himalayas. The root means that each plant dies in order for the user to obtain the oil. Oils from such a distance would have been very hard to find and unusual to have in one’s possession. It has been suggested that this particular oil was Mary’s dowery and that would have made it especially precious to her. The fragrance from this oil was and is known to be quite special; decreasing stress levels and anxiety. In the days ahead, during such difficult and challenging circumstances, Jesus would have experienced the fragrance of that gift over and over. Just as this little flower dies to supply this precious oil, Jesus died in order to supply us with His Salvation. Precious and Priceless on so very, very many levels.
