Summing It Up ...
Listening well is a thing we should all strive for in our lives. It is so hard to do during our regular seasons, but even more challenging during our current season. Thank God that our seasons change on a regular basis. This too shall pass, and in the meantime we can concentrate on the best parts of the worst season in our lives.
Philippians 4:8-9 MSG
“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.”
Yes, it may be tough to get through the challenges that are swirling all around us, but we can overcome the fear and the anger that surrounds us in this season by changing our mindsets, and by listening to the words of this verse; listening AND putting these concepts into practice in our own lives. This verse, ‘summing it up’, is the best possible advice for all of us as we make our way through this very difficult season.
Think about the best, and not the worst possible outcomes; think about the beauty that surrounds us, not the ugly things that we are bombarded with; think about things to praise as we navigate through this season, and not on things to that make us want to curse. Think about the people in our lives ( spouses, children, parents, grandparents, friends, family, and coworkers ) that are true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, and gracious. Think about circumstances and opportunities where we can be true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, and gracious. Think about the previous seasons of our lives and how we overcame the challenges that we experienced with the help of our the Lord God. Look for the wisdom of God’s guidance and unfailing love in those moments and lean into them.
Do that, and God, our Father God, our Lord God who makes everything work together for our good, will work each one of us into His most excellent harmonies. Concentrate on these things ... things that are true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, and gracious ... because there is a new season ahead and all the other stuff is just gravy.
