The Basics

October 22, 2016

How do we stay in tune and in step with God? One of the primary steps is reading the Bible for yourself.  Read the word, thoughtfully contemplate the passage or verse, and listen.  Discuss it with someone.  Talk it through with a mentor.  Meditate on it. The definition of meditation is: to focus one’s thoughts on; to reflect on or to ponder over. How do we do that…it can be personal and different for each of us…For instance, my thoughts are usually centered on music and what songs are playing in my head about a verse, a passage or concept that Holy Spirit is bringing to my mind.  For me music is the way into my spirit.  For you it might be reading aloud, or rewriting the word, or… there are many ways to study.  You should find the one that is right for you.

Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Picture it - Visualize the scene in your mind.

  2. Pronounce it - Say the verse aloud, each time emphasizing a different word.

  3. Paraphrase it - Rewrite the verse in your own words.

  4. Personalize it - Replace the names in the verse with your own name.

  5. Pray it - Turn the verse into a prayer and say it back to God.

  6. Play It – Listen to Worship songs about the verse.

Colossians 3: 15-17 MSG

Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.
