My husband has been talking lately about a concept from a Bible Commentary that he’s been reading. It is that as believers, instead of asking for the end of suffering, we should ask God what we can learn through it. I agree. I don’t believe that God brings bad things or suffering to us to ‘teach us a lesson’. Suffering is a product of this world, not a tool for teaching. I do, however, believe that God will grow us when suffering happens. I do know that Jesus told us that there was going to be trials and sorrows, but that even when we are going through them He would bring us peace. (John 16:33)
When things do go wrong, when trials happen, and you have grief…what then? Wail, cry and seek help from God. Yes. Stomp your feet, complain and yell at God about the pain and grief. Yes. When you don’t have any words left to cry out with and you can only murmur and mumble in your prayers. Do it. And then…What then? Then what do you do? Ask God to help you find peace. Abba (God) will comfort us and give us peace. When we come to the end of ourselves and reach out for Him, He is there. He is with you through all the things that happen, all the trouble and all the anger we feel over it. And He knows how that feels to us and He understands. He will bring you comfort and He will bring you peace. Hold onto the peace, don’t let your trust falter and believe that God’s got this! No matter the trouble. God’s got this!
Romans 8:28 AMP
28 “And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.”
Causes all things to work together for good. What does that mean? It means that no matter what happens to us, no matter what we go through…God will use it for good. Whatever tries to knock you down, takes your joy or just plain pulls the rug out from under you…God will bring something good out of it. For you, for others, for someone else. It is a certainty. The suffering isn’t itself brought from God to teach you a lesson, but the God will bring you a lesson through the suffering. According to His plan and His purposes. The suffering that was meant to bring you down, take your eyes off Jesus, off the love of God is changed into something good and something purposeful.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NLT
3 “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”
Comfort that brings peace to you in a storm and that you can then share with someone else during their storms to bring them comfort. We get comfort, we share comfort. We find peace, we share peace. God is good at sharing! Are you?
