A Leap of Faith

November 29, 2016

Faith. What is it?  A serious question. What does Faith mean to you? The dictionary describes Faith as a complete trust or confidence in someone or something. The book of Hebrews tells us that Faith is believing, even when we don't know for sure, what the outcome will be.

I know at least a dozen people who are going through something. They are taking those first tentative steps of Faith. Most, if not all of us (myself included), sometimes struggle as we reach out to grasp this concept of Faith. We all know what Faith is, but what is it to us 'when the rubber meets the road'?

Fear of the unknown. We, all of us, we like to see what's coming. When we jump, we want to see where we are going to land before we take the leap. Faith asks us to jump without seeing. Whether it's a change in jobs, going back to college, family dynamics, health concerns, moving to a new place, stepping into ministry, (Did you know that Pastors have the same fundamental questions?) or all the other things that ask us to have Faith.  There are so many places and times in our lives when we ask these questions.  The questions can plague us all.

Am I really just bored or disillusioned and what I need to change is my thinking? Is this really me wanting this or is it a true calling? What about my finances?  Can I afford to make this move?   Can I make it as a student?  Am I using wisdom? How will I pay the bills?  Do I deserve this?  What if I take the leap and it falls flat?  What if the report stays bad?  Can I stay grounded in Faith through a bad outcome and still believe it was for a reason?  Do I believe this is what I should do deep down inside my knower?  Have I prayed enough?  Have I talked this though with my family; with my mentors?  What will my family think if I make this change?  Am I too scared to go for it?  Do I have enough faith to take the leap?

The what ifs, the how do I's, and the what will's ...  All these questions have an effect. We can ask so many questions, go in so many circles, plot out all the different scenarios, that we tend to forget that our God IS the God of the impossible not the probable.

It reminds me of that scene in 'The Last Crusade' when Indiana Jones has to believe and take that first step across the chasm. He stands, with his back against the wall (Cuz that's really how it feels right? Like our backs are against the wall?) and he raises his leg, very dramatically, and takes that first big step. It's not until he actually takes the step that he knows there is a way. First he had to have faith.

Hebrews 11 tells us about the Faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah and the list keeps going. It's funny how easy it is to forget that these great heroes of the Bible were real people just like you and me. When you study this chapter you can begin to understand the amount of Faith each person needed. Consider this...they didn't always get to see the outcome of their leap of Faith. How did they feel about not being able to see what happened? Did they struggle with what they believed God had asked of them? Did they have the same kind of questions as we do? I believe that they did. They were real people too. If you go deeper still into the chapter, you can see that it was the Faith of each one of these people, from one to the next, that leads us straight to the Cross and from there, the Cross leads us straight to today. Deciding.  So...here we are back at the question. Faith? Is it time to have Faith...to take the leap?

Hebrews 11:1  MSG

"The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see."
