Who's Opinion Really Matters?

March 13, 2017

'Have some of you noticed that we are not yet perfect? No great surprise, right?'   Duh! This passage really starts off with a bang. Perfect is not a word that describes us. Jesus yes. Us no! Judging each other for falling short of what we each believe is the right or 'perfect' behavior, however, is something that we tend to do perfectly well. Ouch!

'If I was “trying to be good,” I would be rebuilding the same old barn that I tore down.' Dang! That same old barn that I tore down. No thank you. I like reclaimed lumber as much as the next guy, but we have to draw the line somewhere. Don't go backwards, trying to be someone you're not, because you 'think' that's the way you're supposed to act. Trying to be nicer and act better than we really are, isn't really who we are now either. Yikes. Masks. We all have plenty of them, but should we really wear them? We should be who we really are.  Let the Holy Spirit change what we were into what we are becoming, because of His influence and direction. Don't try to be perfect, just try to be obedient. Ouch again.

'So I quit being a “law man” so that I could be God’s man.' Yep. Stop trying to be something you're not, and become who you are in Christ. Everybody has an opinion about how we should act, behave and all the things we do in life. Who's opinion really matters? God's opinion is the only opinion that we need consider. His opponents might judge you, we might judge you and you might judge you, but God loves you just like you are. Yes, we should strive to be better and do better in every aspect of life, but we shouldn't judge ourselves against others. God doesn't. Doing your very best is the best you can do.

'Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to do it.' Let Jesus be your guide to living. When we get to the point that we can see that potential, that's when we are on our way to living well. How do we get there? Read and study the Word. Listen and respond to the Holy Spirit. Have faith. Believe that God's purpose will work itself out in your life. And love. Love others like Jesus loves you. We can never go wrong with love. Jesus will show us how to live well and He will enable us to do it well. Hallelujah!

Galatians 2:17-19 MSG

"Have some of you noticed that we are not yet perfect? No great surprise, right? And are you ready to make the accusation that since people like me, who go through Christ in order to get things right with God, aren’t perfectly virtuous, Christ must therefore be an accessory to sin? The accusation is frivolous. If I was “trying to be good,” I would be rebuilding the same old barn that I tore down. I would be acting as a charlatan. What actually took place is this: I tried keeping rules and working my head off to please God, and it didn’t work. So I quit being a “law man” so that I could be God’s man. Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to do it."
