Sanctified

April 24, 2017

Sanctification. I heard this word today. I've heard this word throughout my Christian walk. I've heard it, but until today I didn't really understand it.

Sanctification. It's one of those big highfaluting religious words. We hear them. We look them up. We try to understand them, but when it comes right down to it, most of us just don't get it.

Sanctified means 'to be declared holy'. Well, that's about God. We understand that God is Holy. God is ... God is everything Holy. That part we understand, but the term sanctified is always used to describe us. Believers. We should be sanctified. Right? How? What? Huh?  That's where we stumble with understanding. Then today, I heard and understood.

Sanctification is 'the on-going process of Jesus changing us to look like Him'. Being Sanctified means that God's not done with us yet. Sanctification means that we are a work in progress. Yep. We are all half baked. Hallelujah!  Jesus is Alive in us, He's changing us and we are changing. One day at a time. Changing us to be more and more like Him. That's what being sanctified means. Jesus is working on us to make us more like Him.  It is by that process that we are sanctified. Well, for mercy's sake. Hallelujah! Now that I understand.

Aren't we grateful that we're not what we used to be, and that Jesus is still working on us. We are getting there. We are sanctified because He's still at work on the innermost parts of us. Changing us from the inside out. He sanctifies us because He is Holy. Dude! Now that's truth.

Our part. (Yep. We have our part to do.) We have to set our minds on things 'true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.'   We have to do our best to think well. We have to contemplate the good and the gracious. We have to remember the good things of God; the love and the peace and the joy, all the beautiful things, even when the bad things in life happen. We have to strive towards authenticity, nobility and truth. We have to maintain our integrity, work on ourselves and do our part.

'Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.'  He will work us into His most excellent harmonies.  I want that, don't you? Yes, God makes it all come together.  Man Alive and Sanctified. I get it now. Do you?

Philippians 4:8 MSG
"Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies."
