My friend suggested we should all be synonyms of our faith (Smart Lady). It really got me thinking about how we see ourselves and how others see us. As we continue on our search to define humility and our own actions, what are we portraying to the world?
I am still floored by the definition of humility. Freedom from...the antonyms were numerous but the synonyms were few. I looked through the thesaurus' and multiple dictionaries. Humility is defined as freedom from its antonyms.
Antonyms (opposite) for Humility are arrogance, conceit, egotistical, haughty, huffiness, imperious, loftiness, aggressiveness, pompous, presumptive, pretentious, overly proud, prideful, superiority complex and self centeredness. (You know there are alot more, but I shortened the list.)
There were a whole lot less words in the synoym list, but once I found a Bible dictionary I hit pay dirt. Synonyms (same as) for Humility are kind, compassionate, merciful, down to earth, honest, good hearted, thoughtful, loving, gracious, forgiving, unpretentious and generous.
The Light of Jesus along with lots these synonyms are what we need to share with the world around us. Ask God to use you to make a difference and you will begin to see the possibilities for your strengths to be used to make a difference.
Humility. What it really is, is a knowing. Knowing that every gift you have, every skill you've established, every step you take towards success, is a direct result of how God created you to be you. When we know that, really know deep down inside of our hearts and minds, that all we are, is all because of who God is, we can begin to understand humility. Let me say that again.
Who we are, is because of who God is. That's the road to understanding humility.
James 1:21 MSG
"In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life."
God created you to be you. On purpose. Be content to be YOU and then be the best you that you can be. Be a synonym of your faith. You are the difference that can make a difference. The possibilities are endless.
Colossians 3: 12-14 MSG
"So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it."
