Our Histories

June 20, 2017

Everybody has a history. It's inevitable. Our histories change and develop each day as we drift off to sleep. Yesterday becomes part of what makes us who we are. It becomes part of our history.

We all have a history that we easily share with others. You've been to the Grand Canyon and they've been to Grand Caymans. You've got 6 siblings and they're an only child. You can drive a stick shift and they never learned. Easy histories to share.

When it comes down to our troubles, our challenges, that's when sharing can become difficult. It's tough to admit that we have had rough patches, experienced traumatic events, survived struggles or grief. We can find it difficult to share these moments with other people. We can also find it challenging to be the one chosen to hear and share in someone else's troubles.

'That’s exactly what Jesus did. He didn’t make it easy for himself by avoiding people’s troubles, but waded right in and helped out.'

Sharing our troubles, lifting each other up, sharing our burdens and loving each other through the rough patches is what we are called to do and be. When we share, and pray for each other we divide up the weight of our burdens.

'May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all.'

Our dependable, steady and warmly personal God develops each of us to become more and more like Jesus. Infused with His steady, constant calling and warm, personal counsel we minister to one another. Sharing our histories can help someone else with today's struggle. Sharing how His strength and love helped you overcome can help them develop their own strength and love in God. Each of us becoming more and more like Jesus; dependable, steady and warmly personal in our relationships with others. Our very lives singing in harmony with God.

Yes, there will be the occasional discordant note, a sharp or a flat that could have stopped the song.  We may encounter the occasional key change that we find difficult, but God has a way of directing us to the right place and to the right people, that has the help we need to bring us into His beautiful harmony.

Romans 15:3-6 MSG
"That’s exactly what Jesus did. He didn’t make it easy for himself by avoiding people’s troubles, but waded right in and helped out. “I took on the troubles of the troubled,” is the way Scripture puts it. Even if it was written in Scripture long ago, you can be sure it’s written for us. God wants the combination of his steady, constant calling and warm, personal counsel in Scripture to come to characterize us, keeping us alert for whatever he will do next. May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all. Then we’ll be a choir—not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus!"
