If you have ever experienced a panic attack, you know that it feels indescribable. If you have experienced depression, you know that it feels overwhelming. If you have ever experienced anxiety, you know all about losing control of your own responses.
I read an article the other day that described these very situations as 'dirty little secrets' in the church. Since I read the article, it has been troubling my heart and my spirit. Why are these illnesses and conditions considered dirty or secret? Why are they stigmatized? If we need help with a physical aliment, then we need help. Period. We can no more control these ailments ourselves than we can control the wind.
If you cut your foot and need stitches, you pray and you go see a doctor. If you get an ear infection, and need antibiotics you pray and you go see a doctor. If you are in pain and are diagnosed with gall stones, you pray and you go see a doctor. If you have heart issues, you pray and see a doctor. If you have panic attacks, anxiety or depression you pray and you see a doctor.
I can't think of anything that I would like to do less than go to the doctor, until I need help with a physical aliment. Then I pray and go get the help I need from a gifted physician. If you need to see a therapist, go see a therapist. Physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy or talk therapy. There is horse therapy and play therapy and group therapy and water therapy. It's all therapy. Sometimes the tools we need to get through to our healing is found in the right therapy. Pray for the right doctor, with the right treatment for you, and then go get your healing.
Going to see a doctor doesn't negate the abilities of our Great Physician. God, Himself, gives lots of suggestions for health and healing all throughout the Bible. Pray and ask God for healing. Pray and ask God to help you select the right physician. Pray for wisdom and knowledge for the right treatment. Then go get it.
Healing is a gift from God. Pray and get some direction. Find a gifted physician with the right treatment for what ails you. It's always great if your doctor also prays. Ask them to pray with you and for you ... and you pray with and for them. Healing for what ails you. It's not a secret, dirty or otherwise. It's just plain old common sense. God gives us our gifts to help one another. Go get some help.
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 NLT
"There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us."
