Harvest. The word 'Harvest' appears to be a theme of late. There are many aspects of the word 'harvest' that impacts us as believers. Let's look at it from the aspect of the farmer working the harvest.
What is a harvest? In farming terms it is the process of gathering a ripe crop from the field. Harvest time is the most labor intensive activity of the growing season. From the very beginning of the season; the preparation of the ground, through planting the seed, protecting the growth of the plants, watering, weeding and all that goes into caring for the plants; it takes work. A lot of work, yet harvest takes the most work of all. Harvest time is described as the most difficult of the entire process, nevertheless with hard work and wisdom, it will produce and provide abundance.
Farmers till the soil with their entire bodies. Farmers use the muscles of their arms, legs, backs and hands as they prepare and plant; trudging up and down the rows, pulling up weeds and treating and adjusting for a wide variety of varmints and incursions. Water and sunshine are on their minds. Rain and sun; in all it's variations and how it will impact the potential harvest. Decisions about treating with fertilizer or mounding, transferring seedlings from here to there and so much more. There is a lot to do and little time, so farmers tend to make the most of their opportunities. It takes brains and brawn. It takes the entire body to work the fields towards abundance.
The entire body. Wow! That word stands out, filled with emphasis and importance. The entire body. That's you and me. We are all called to do our part, to do our best work in the harvest fields. When we are in relationship with Jesus; our hearts, our minds and our attitudes become more focused on sharing His Word and His love.
The harvest fields that we have access to are varied and have so many possibilities for producing abundance. The harvest field for you might be right at home with friends and family, at work with coworkers, or within your own community. It may be at the community center, at the downtown music scene, on the basketball court or baseball field, or in the political arena. You may find your strength of purpose at your local farmer's market, at your school, in a club, across social media, or smack dab in the middle of a foreign missions posting. The opportunities are only restricted by our own imagination and actions.
Don't restrict yourself or the potential harvest field. The potential to produce abundance is all around us. When you are joined with Jesus and Jesus is joined with you, the relationship is intimate and organic and the harvest is sure to be abundant. Go for it. You can do anything when you've got Jesus.
John 15:5 MSG
“I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing."
