Distracted. This is not an everyday, or even an occasional occurrence, yet this week I have been distracted. Distracted by events and situations that have besieged me. Yep. Besieged me. And the week is only half over. Have you ever felt this type of distraction in your life?
Besiege is usually associated with military tactics. I am referring to the more common definition of a feeling of distress, or perhaps it is a battle tactic after all. Surrounded by events and situations that feel as though they might have the ability to overtake our defenses. 'Feeling as though' is actually not the same as 'able to'. When we are less than able, God is always more than able.
Thank God we have a defense that battles every obstacle that tries to shake us. God stands up for us against the things that harass us. God takes our side. 'If God is for us, who can ever come against us.'(Romans 8:31)
Psalm 94:16-19 MSG
"Who stood up for me against the wicked? Who took my side against evil workers? If God hadn’t been there for me, I never would have made it. The minute I said, “I’m slipping, I’m falling,” your love, God, took hold and held me fast. When I was upset and beside myself, you calmed me down and cheered me up."
Distractions and besiegement are nothing more than a tactical complication. No more, no less. When we are upset or beside ourselves with doubt and distractions, God will calm us down and cheer us up. No doubt about it. (Pun intended) As we consult and discuss our concerns with God, we can feel it all fall away. Praise God, the weight falls away as God's love takes hold.
