My grandfather was a carpenter. I loved to sit and watch him turn legs on the lathe. It was so magical to see a square piece of wood transformed into an elegant piece of art. He was a firm believer in biscuits, dowels and dovetail joints. All wood all the time. Joined without nails. That was always the goal. For larger items pegs were always used to produce the join. These big rounded dowel like pieces of wood that would fit one piece with another. The peg was the thing that held it all together. The strength behind the structure was found in the peg.
Matthew 22:37-40 MSG
"Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.’ This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.”
I read these words and that same peg came into my mind. The strength that holds everything together is found in these two commands.
1. Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.
2. Love others as well as you love yourself.
Number 1 & 2. It's all about love. Love is the peg that holds it all together. Love God. Love others. That's straight from Jesus. We too are joined without nails, because Jesus took those for us. He took them, because of His Love for us. Love. Love is definitely the peg that holds it all together. Yep. He was a carpenter too.
