Most of us have encountered a difficult situation while attempting to discuss an important issue by phone. Like calling for tech support and getting tossed from one department to another. Perhaps the electric bill is much more than anticipated and you're trying to discover why. Maybe your doctors office staff leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to communication. Communication can be a hotbed issue of frustration.
When our point isn't registering with someone we are speaking with we can get to the place where we just want to scream at them. Throwing the phone and jumping up and down can seem like reasonable responses when we are frustratingly unable to communicate with others. We are speaking, and yet, no one else seems to understand. When we're confronted with conflicting responses we can feel unheard. When the other speaker becomes hostile or confrontational we can respond in kind, which usually only helps the situation dwindle into intolerable and we get nowhere.
'You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.' You've probably heard it. You may have said it. My Momma and Granny were very familiar with this one. I always thought it sounded kinda gross. Who wants to catch flies anyways, right? To tell you the truth I always assumed (yeah I know, right?) that this old saying must be a Proverb. Guessed wrong. It might be a proverb, but it's not from the Proverbs.
Proverbs 15:1 NKJV
"A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger."
Same thing said in a different and much more understandable way. God is so good to us. Easy to understand guidance that illustrates the how to's of an everyday life circumstance.
Soft words is not only about volume (although not yelling is usually much more helpful). Soft words is about remaining calm, speaking with respect and dignity. For ourselves and the people we are speaking with. Soft words reminds us of the power behind our words. (That would be our unbridled tongues). Soft words speaks to the honey that should be found coming from our lips. Soft words is about trying hard to breathe deeply and remain relaxed. Soft words is all about the fruit of the Spirit. Kindness, gentleness and patience. Yep. Love and peace. Joy. Yep. That too. Humor can diffuse a difficult situation. Smiling, even when we're on the phone, makes a difference. Goodness for goodness sakes and Faith. Lots of Faith.
It takes work on our part to put our faith into practice during difficult situations. It takes faith to utilize our faith to get through these types of circumstances. Faith that we can lean into our God for help. Faith that Holy Spirit will help us rise above. Faith that God will give us the right words to say to the right person at the right time. Faith that our message will be clearly understood. Faith that we will remember to use our fruit appropriately. Faith. Yep. It's all about the honey.
