John 3 begins with a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus. Nicodemus is a Pharisee. He is a guy "with some clout", who sits on the ruling council known as the Sanhedrin. He seeks out Jesus and listens carefully to His teachings. He asks questions and he is thoughtful about the answers. As each of us begins our journey with Jesus we all want to hear what He says. We ask questions and get answers, just like Nicodemus.
What does it mean to be born again? Jesus exIplains in verse 5 'I tell you the truth, if someone does not experience water and Spirit birth, there’s no chance he will make it into God’s kingdom.' Baptism by water and rebirth into new life. Everlasting life. 'Whoever is born of flesh is flesh and whoever is born of Spirit is Spirit'. Jesus goes on to explain that the Spirit of God is like the wind. You feel it, you hear it. You know that the wind is there, but you don't understand where it comes from or where it is going. 'Life in the Spirit is as if it were the wind of God.' You will know the Spirit is there. You will feel Him, you will hear Him and you will know the Spirit of God.
Nicodemus tells Jesus that he still does not understand. Jesus questions Nicodemus' spiritual credintials. He askes him how a trusted teacher can not understand the 'necessity of life in the Spirit'. If you don't understand the 'ordinary, earthly realities, then heavenly realities will certainly elude you.' Jesus talks to him about Moses and the serpant that was turned into a staff. This miracle was to show the power of God. The Son of Man too, comes to reveal the power of God. 'In the same way, the Son of Man must be lifted up; then all those who believe in Him will experience everlasting life.'
John 3:16-17 Voice
"For God expressed His love for the world in this way: He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not face everlasting destruction, but will have everlasting life. Here’s the point. God didn’t send His Son into the world to judge it; instead, He is here to rescue a world headed toward certain destruction."
From what we know, we understand that Nicodemus came to his encounter that evening under cover of darkness. Either, he didn't want the others to see him and know that he was talking to Jesus, or he was an undercover agent. Let's hope that the Spirit of God came to be known to Nicodemus that night. Imagine learning the truth directly from Jesus. It is because of Jesus, that we no longer have to fear the dark. We can walk in the light. It is the Light of Jesus that casts out darkness.
We, all of us people, may hold tight to the darkness for a time, but when we finally walk into the Light of Jesus we are given a new life. It isn't a life with strife, it is New Life. It is a life filled with connection to God. Connection to God means that our help and our strength come directly from the Father. He frees us from the fears found in darkness. This freedom is only found in and through Jesus. Whosoever believes in Jesus will not perish, but have eternal life. With Jesus we are under HIS cover. That is truly living. May the Spirit of God blow through your life wiping out the darkness and filling you with His Light.
