The Bread of Life

November 11, 2017

The crowd that had been following Jesus found him in Capernaum.  ‘Rabbi, how did you get here?’ and Jesus looked around at them and said ‘you are looking for me because I fed you. I filled your bellies and it was for free. You aren’t looking for me because you see God in what I am doing.  You waste your time, striving for things that don’t last. I am trying to talk to you about life, ever-lasting life. That is the kind of food that the Son of Man provides, and it is guaranteed by God the Father to last.’

They didn’t understand what Jesus was talking about. They asked Him what work they could do to get in on this. Jesus looked out over the crowd. His eyes focusing as told them that they needed to connect with and commit to the One that God has sent to them. They waffled. They hemmed and hawed. They still didn’t understand. ‘Give us a clue. Tell us who you really are. Show us what you can do.  Give us a miraculous sign.  Moses fed our ancestors with bread in the desert.’  As a suggestion, a reminder, or perhaps because the bread was so plentiful the day before, but Jesus responded, “The real significance of that Scripture is not that Moses gave you bread from heaven, but that my Father is right now offering you bread from heaven, the real bread. The Bread of God came down out of heaven and is giving life to the world.”  Then Jesus gave them more than mere food for thought, He gave them words that they could understand.

John 6:35-38 MSG

“Jesus said, “I am the Bread of Life. The person who aligns with me hungers no more and thirsts no more, ever. I have told you this explicitly because even though you have seen me in action, you don’t really believe me. Every person the Father gives me eventually comes running to me. And once that person is with me, I hold on and don’t let go. I came down from heaven not to follow my own whim but to accomplish the will of the One who sent me.”

I hold on and don’t let go. He never lets go.  Then Jesus goes on to explain.  This is it, in a nutshell, God the Father has a plan, and everything in His plan has to be completed, without a single detail missed. ‘This is what my Father wants: that anyone who sees the Son and trusts who he is and what he does and then aligns with him will enter real life, eternal life.’  This is not my agenda, it is the Father’s plan and He sent Me to care for all He has given Me, so that nothing and no one will perish. Some of the people there, began to argue over Him saying ‘Isn’t this Joseph’s son, the carpenter.  We know His father and His mother.  How can He say he came from heaven?’  Jesus responded and told them to stop arguing and muttering under their breath.  In the scriptures it says that everyone will be taught of God (Isaiah 54:13). If you have heard and learned from the Father then you will find ME.

John 6:53-58 MSG

"But Jesus didn’t give an inch. “Only insofar as you eat and drink flesh and blood, the flesh and blood of the Son of Man, do you have life within you. The one who brings a hearty appetite to this eating and drinking has eternal life and will be fit and ready for the Final Day. My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. By eating my flesh and drinking my blood you enter into me and I into you. In the same way that the fully alive Father sent me here and I live because of him, so the one who makes a meal of me lives because of me. This is the Bread from heaven. Your ancestors ate bread and later died. Whoever eats this Bread will live always.”

The disciples and those hearing these words began to look confused and uncomfortable.  Jesus sensed that they were having a hard time grasping what He was telling them. He told them ‘Every word I speak is Spirit-word, and so it is life-making. But some of you are resisting, refusing to have any part in this.'  He knew that this was going to send some of those who were following Him running for the hills. He looked at each of the twelve. “Do you also want to leave?”

John 6:68-71 MSG

"Peter replied, “Master, to whom would we go? You have the words of real life, eternal life. We’ve already committed ourselves, confident that you are the Holy One of God.” Jesus responded, “Haven’t I handpicked you, the Twelve? Still, one of you is a devil!” He was referring to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. This man—one from the Twelve! —was even then getting ready to betray him.”

Jesus is the Bread of Life.  The Bread that gives Life.  The living Bread from Heaven.  Life-making heavenly Bread. The Word that is Spirit breathed and filled with Life.  Jesus is the Bread of Life.
