Tangled Lights

December 1, 2017

Today was a steady and full day. I was re-engineering the lights on our Christmas tree as I responded to text messages and emails. Pine tree bites mixed with prayer requests and praise reports. The combination made for some interesting moments.

Each year, as we put the tree together, we find another set of lights isn't working. This year that meant removing all of the lights. It was a gnarly mess. Twisted and all tied in knots. It was so bad that I had to start at the top, dropping the lights, making a large pile that completely surrounded the tree. I recognized the symptoms of grief as I struggled to untangle the chaos.

Last years tree trimming was a rough time for me. My sister had passed away just before Thanksgiving. Tangled, twisted and chaotic. Last year, we celebrated her home-going and then moved right into celebrating Christmas. My grief definitely showed in my lack of light stringing focus.

Today, as I recognized that a year has past, I understand how much healing has happened in my life. It is still difficult sometimes, yet it is through the peace and love of Jesus that I know that I am well on my way towards the other side of grief. God will turn our mourning into dancing. It's a promise that God encourages us to remember when we feel our hearts are breaking.

Psalm 30:11-12 AMP
"You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy. That my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever."

Today's involvement with prayer requests and praise reports helped keep me focused on Jesus. Turning what might have benched me, into a good day that was not all about me and my feelings. Instead, it was a day all about Him. The light of Jesus was there and the path ahead was clearly marked, as He untangling me in the process of untangling the lights. It was a day filled with understanding, hope and love.

God is the way maker. We give thanks to the Lord forever, because with God at our side we know there is always a way through. He will make a way when there seems to be no way. Right there, in the place where all we see is 'no way', God's hand moves and we can get through. When God moves His hand, He makes a way for us to dance again. God helps us realize that we can remember and once again find joy.
