Walls

April 23, 2018

Matthew 17:20  MSG

“Because you’re not yet taking God seriously,” said Jesus. “The simple truth is that if you had a mere kernel of faith, a poppy seed, say, you would tell this mountain, ‘Move!’ and it would move. There is nothing you wouldn’t be able to tackle.”

Walls. We've all got them. Boundaries, obstacles and maybe even an ornamental wall or two. Walls can be a very good thing or they can be mountainous things that have to be scaled, knocked down and turned into manageable stones.

Walls might be boundaries that we've erected for protection or as a parameter. For example, setting boundaries on our time; family time, work time, and volunteer time. I have this much time available and no more. Learning to say 'NO' to even the most valid request is hard to learn. This type of boundary is a good wall.

Setting aside 'Me' time can be a great boundary. We all need those moments here and there to just get away from all the demands on our times, our talents and our minds. Restful boundaries are an ornamental wall of the highest caliber.

Walls that stand in front us can be mountainous. They could be walls that are be keeping something or someone out. Traumatic walls that started out as boundaries or parameters that, over time, became so tall that nothing and no one could see in, let alone you being able to see out. These walls need to be scaled and you have to work your way over them. Through prayer and counseling you can throw a hook in that wall and haul your butt right up that thing. Once you get to the top you'll be so amazed at the beauty that had been blocked from your view. It's so worthwhile to scale this kind of wall, through the work and everything that goes with it, because once you reach the top, it more than makes up for the hard journey it takes to get there.

Walls that keep us from getting something, going somewhere or the ability to see where we really want to go can be another example of extreme walls. These walls could be related to a financial risk, a time management issue, or even, perhaps (shudder the thought) a lack of vision or maybe our own defeatist attitude. Changing this wall from mountain into a proper boundary or knocking that sucker down all together might seem impossible. I'm here to tell you isn't impossible. Even the smallest, tiniest bit of faith can turn that mountainous thing into rubble. Rubble that you can turn into a path that will deliver you to the place God has called you to.

You can tackle anything, even walls that are mountainous obstacles. With God on your side, all it takes is a single poppy seeds {same kind of thing as a mustard seed} worth of faith and you can move mountains. Jesus calls this a simple truth. A simple truth.
