Stinking Thinking

April 25, 2018

What do you do when fear and worry is taking over your thoughts?  For the last few days someone I know has been having sudden bouts of fear and worry. He knows that his fear is not real, but the worry he feels is very real to him. What can you do to help yourself, or someone you know, when faced with this kind of dilemma?

Some people can brush off a sense of fear and worry easier than others. I know that there have been times in my life that I have have let fear take hold of my thoughts. When I was able to talk about my feelings with someone who was loving and supportive it helped me put my fears and worries into perspective. When I talked about my feelings with someone who wasn't supportive or who made fun of me it tended to amplify my feelings.

Elijah, the great prophet, had fears and worries. He, too, struggled to overcome his feelings of anxiety. What did Elijah do?  Who did Elijah talk too?  (1 Kings 19: 3-21) Elijah ran away when fear  and worry overtook him. What did God do?  God didn't brush Elijah's fears off, walk away from him or make fun of him. God sent an angel to comfort him, feed him and gave him a place to rest. God listened and talked Elijah through his bout of 'stinking thinking'. Then God gave him a job to do and sent him a friend.

Philippians 4:6  MSG
"Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life."

When you're faced with bouts of 'stinking thinking' talk to God. He has heard it all before. He won't brush you off, make fun of your fears or throw you under the bus. He will talk you through it and help you recharge and realize the turn in your perspective.  Talk to Him. Like Elijah, God will help you get back on track, encourage you to get on with your life and maybe even send a friend your way.
