Philippians 4: 9 "Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies."
I was stuck by the phasing at the end of this passage. Man, that's what I want. I want to be worked into an excellent harmony. I want my life to sing a melodious song of grace. I want my voice to rise to the occasion. I want my heart to find the harmony and my mind and my song will follow into a God inspired most excellent harmony. How? How do we achieve an excellent harmony when we have to deal with the rest of the world?
It might be through a job, a situation or through an accidental tragedy, but we see ugly things that touch our spirit. I have heard about the horrors seen by friends who deal with the worst and the ugly on a regular basis. Memories that are shared, so that the horror could be excised from someone's mind. I have felt the intensity of those dark moments that bring us to our knees and fill our minds with turmoil. I too have dealt with my own share of horrible, ugly moments. Life can be brutal. How do we move beyond the horrible and work our way into the harmony?
You'll do best by...
Filling your minds with things that are true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, and gracious. Filling your minds with the best, the beautiful, and with things to praise. Reverse the the desire to curse the horrible and the ugly by looking for the good, the noble, and the gracious in those moments. Find authentic and compelling truth that you can hold onto. Don't dwell on the ugliness but look for and find the good. Don't stay focused on the turmoil but focus on the peace in the midst of the storm. Focus on Jesus. And when you do...God, the same God who holds the world together, will hold you together. God WILL make ALL things work together into a most excellent harmony. Including you!
Philippians 4: 8-9 MSG
"Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies."
