Weakness is a term we may consider as a ‘less than’ characteristic. Less than what we each hope that we are, because we are struggling or dealing with something. We each have our own perspective about ourselves and our personal struggles. We may be dealing with a health issue that is a struggle, we may be filled with anxiety or self doubt, we might have fears or phobias, or some other thing that we (or others) consider a weakness. Whatever it is, here in this verse, we see that it is in our weakness that we find renewed strength in the grace of Jesus.
2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT
“Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.”
Paul is speaking about a particular issue, something that he is dealing with on a fairly regular basis. We can make various suppositions over what exactly this thing was, but Paul isn’t specific. I suspect that God chose for Paul not to be specific, specifically so that we might apply our voice to our own personal weakness. Whatever our weakness is, be it in our body, mind or spirit, the grace that is offered through Jesus is sufficient. On a daily basis, irregularly or occasionally, when we find ourselves stuck and stumbling, God’s Grace is the very source of strength that we need, each and every time.
