Cool Factor

October 27, 2018

How we see ourselves can be a complicated issue. We may tend to overthink issues related to our hair; the shades of grey that are springing up or maybe we’re concerned about how it’s thinning, isn’t curling or straightening correctly, or perhaps it’s all about that new bald spot that has recently been pointed out on more than one occasion <sigh>. We may be concerned with designer labels and how much more (or less) expensive we look compared to someone else. We could be concerned about how our clothes fit; are they too loose, too tight or just right. We are all imperfect people, and being perceived as cool or not cool is a big deal for most of us. In reality the stuff on the outside of us isn’t nearly as important as how our inner attitudes impact the world.

1 Peter‬ ‭3:3-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬
“Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.”

Although this passage is specifically addressing women, I think we can all relate to our own perceptions of how we look to the world. We all have perceived imperfections that may or may or may not be visible to the rest of the world. Today I saw true beauty. This person's scars and imperfections were clearly in evidence, yet they were courageously going about their business. Quietly and gently, without being overly self-conscious or dramatic about their situation. Instead they were doing the things that needed to be done with a quiet and gentle spirit. This person reminded me that how we look on the outside isn’t nearly important as how we act to those we encounter. The beauty that is found on the inside of us makes the outside of us truly beautiful and that’s the truest kind cool factor that there is.
