The Process of Discovery

November 5, 2018

Romans 13:1 MSG
“Be a good citizen. All governments are under God. Insofar as there is peace and order, it's God's order. So live responsibly as a citizen.”

We are preparing for an election here in America, and as I was working on my voters ballot today, I was reminded of this verse from Romans 13. I want to be all the things that God wants me to be, and that includes being a good citizen. As we all know, wanting and striving are two entirely separate things <sigh>. I don’t know about you, but that sample ballot has been staring at me for a couple of weeks now. I know that it is waiting for me, and yet I still put it off. I might be the only one, but I have not been looking forward to deciphering the amendments ... at all. I find that I am generally conflicted by the language, but I will not let that deter me. I will investigate, and I will research, and I will pray, before I make my final decision. As citizens and as individuals we have the obligation and responsibility to inform ourselves before casting our ballot. I found it interesting as I was reading through Romans 13 that the last verse was about this very subject {at least as for today}.

Romans 13:14 MSG
“Get out of bed and get dressed! Don't loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!”

Don’t wait until the last minute and make a rash decision in the process. Don’t follow along willy-nilly with the crowd. We should be informed by informing ourselves. We should be doing our own due diligence while we have time to consider and pray. Seeking God’s counsel and praying for clarity and wisdom, as we make our way through the process, is one of the most crucial parts of the voting process. Our voices are important, and there’s no time like the present to begin the process of discovery. Discover the truth, prayerfully consider that truth, and then we can voice our truth by voting with confidence.
