Today I was shopping with a friend. As we were entering a store we were walking together and talking, when I suddenly realized that she wasn’t next to me anymore. As I looked back over my shoulder, I saw that she was helping a bell ringer with his apron. She made quick work of a knot, helped him get his apron on and adjusted, and tied a quick bow. As she helped him, he told her that he had been struggling with his apron for twenty minutes. When she had completed her assistance, he offered his thanks and we went on our way. We were together, but she saw the situation in need of a kind gesture. She saw a need, she took action, she was thoughtful, encouraging and she was kind. She didn’t make a big show of it, she just did what was needed with a smile and genuine kindness. God’s love shared through kindness in action. A random act of kindness isn’t always thought out or premeditated, but it is always a blessing.
1 John 3:18 NLT
“Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”
Random acts of kindness are actions that we take on behalf of someone else. The idea is to help someone without expectations. There are websites, foundations and nonprofit organizations that offer ideas to help us become more thoughtful about the opportunities we have to be kind. Ideas that we can participate in as a group, or as an individual. Ideas that we can all participate in and ideas where we all have the ability to share kindness. Wherever we go and whatever we are doing, we should choose kindness each and everyday.
