School is out for winter break and hopefully we are all set for Christmas. The air is filled with light and cheer. There is also a little bit of a chill in the air which makes staying inside feel toasty. Today was no exception, and it began with a surprise. This morning we had found that our elf, Buddy, had busted into the gingerbread mix, so we decided today was a good day to tackle that bit of fun. However, our box of gingerbread men mix did not have the greatest directions. Interestingly enough, no where on the box did it suggest that we utilize a bowl, but we decided that was probably a good idea anyway. We were so excited and full of laughter that we got off track and decorated the poor cookies before we baked them. Well ... what could we do except pop those little guys into the oven anyway. Their eyes melted a bit, which I have to admit was kind of frightful, but that was quickly remedied with a touch of icing. They may not have been the best looking cookies we’ve ever baked, but they sure did taste good. Today’s lesson; good directions and following those directions are an important part of life.
Luke 2:8-12 MSG
“There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.”
That night the angel who spoke to the shepherds was specific and his directions were clear. First and foremost, don’t be afraid. He shared some great news. I mean astounding news that is meant for the whole world. The Messiah has been born. The Savior has been born. You should go to David’s town (Bethlehem) and look for a new born baby, wrapped in a blanket, lying in a manger. Clear and concise directions. God’s directions. God's directions were delivered through this angel and they were easy to follow and the words were also full of encouragement. God’s Word, His directions for us, are clear, concise and always full of encouragement.
